Want an even better reason not to skip breakfast? Join the Women In Music NI Breakfast Club on during Women’s Work and hosted by Female DIY Musician founder, Isobel Anderson (www.femalediymusician.com). Each morning Isobel will be giving informal, yet incredibly useful workshops on themes ranging from imposter syndrome to marketing your music online, all with a coffee and croissants. This is an opportunity to find out more about Women In Music, what we do and how you can join this fantastic global organisation (womeninmusic.org). These events are supported by Help Musicians NI.

It’s time to stop waiting for permission and get your music out there!

Schedule as follows:

THURSDAY 6th JUNE - ASSERTIVENESS IN THE STUDIO

BOOK YOUR TICKET

Is technology just not your strong point? Do you feel totally out of your depth around mixing desks and vocal booths? If so, you might find it hard to be assertive in the recording studio, but we’ve got you covered! In this workshop, Isobel will be diving into how to feel more confident and prepared for your next recording project.

FRIDAY 7th JUNE - HOW TO FINISH YOUR SONGS (AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT)

BOOK YOUR TICKET

Many, many songwriters find coming up with ideas the easy part of songwriting - it’s finishing their songs that’s tough. If this is something you’re struggling with then you’ll definitely want to come to this workshop where Isobel will be sharing some tips and insights from her own songwriting practice and experience as a songwriting tutor in London’s Institute Of Contemporary Music Performance.

SATURDAY 8th JUNE - ARE YOU SUFFERING WITH IMPOSTER SYNDROME?

BOOK YOUR TICKET

Ever feel like some day, sooner-or-later, everyone’s going to realise just how untalented/inexperienced/untechnical/[insert other negative descriptive here] you are? Just one slip up, and your cover will be blown! If so, you may be suffering from imposter syndrome, and this workshop will show you how to overcome this very common feeling.

SUNDAY 9th JUNE - SHOW YOUR EMAIL LIST SOME LOVE!

BOOK YOUR TICKET

Email lists are dead right? Social media’s where it’s at now? Wrong! Well, kind of. In this workshop Isobel explains why email lists are still incredibly important and how you can actively grow and nurture your own. And, don’t worry - this does link in with your social media strategy too!

Blondie Karaoke and DJ

ICON night is proud to return for another year to Women’s Work Festival. After the success of last year we are this year going even bigger, celebrating BLONDIE. We will have performances from some of the most acclaimed female artists in NI performing Blondie’s back catalogue and their own original material. A night of live performances, DJ sets, colour and noise.

This is a celebration of a band that refuses to be defined by genre, politics, time or style. True innovators, Blondie has become a source of influence for so many artists and the iconic front woman Debbie Harry has successfully maintained a career both with the band and solo with a sound and look that is instantly recognisable. She has created a personality, a look that is copied and covered again and again, a cartoon version of herself that has become the blonde, red lipped trademark of a true cultural icon.

FRI. 7 JUNE ~ Stranded: Alana Henderson

Strand Cinema, 152-154 Holywood Rd, Belfast BT4 1NY

Cellist and singer Alana Henderson weaves pop, folk and classical elements to craft a sound which is strikingly unique. She made her debut in 2014 with 'Wax & Wane', an organic, slow-burn success which has amassed 9 million streams to date on Spotify alone. Lyrics that flirt with levity but lean towards the confessional, innovative cello playing, delicate production and a sense of intimacy created a sound which drew worthy comparison to Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom and Vashti Bunyan.

A two-year stint moonlighting as Hozier's touring cellist saw Alana travelling the World paying her musical dues but homecoming brought about a self-imposed hiatus and drawing-of-breath, punctuated by one haunting single release, “Let This Remain” (2017).

2019 sees Alana back with a new EP, her trademark cello now bolstered with shimmering electronics and ghostly slide guitar. As with her previous work, the themes revolve around love and relationships in various states of evolution, but it is the angle from which Alana launches these songs that makes for fresh and vital listening.

Is the radio revolution upon us? Zoe Ball, Lauren Laverne, Sara Cox, Mary Anne Hobbs are now helping to balance the gender issue across the biggest daytime radio shows in the UK – a seismic shift from the historically double-decked male dominance. In this special Women’s Work panel we are joined by the women ‘holding it down’ in the North of Ireland – the voices, the curators, the ground breakers...

This panel is suited to those trying to break into radio as either a presenter or producer. It also offers an opportunity for musicians trying to get their music played to meet the people responsible for introducing new acts to big audiences.

The practical session will be followed by a discussion with the MU’s Live Performance Official Kelly Wood which will focus on all things live performance from getting the gig to getting paid and how to maximise your live performance experience.
